Abstract:

Inappropriate sexual behavior can have severe consequences for individuals and their communities. Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities who engage in inappropriate sexual behavior may be at an increased risk of encountering the criminal justice system, restricted independence, and contacting negative social contingencies. The discussion will address the barriers to accurate assessment of inappropriate sexual behavior and the complexities encountered in designing and implementing function-based treatments. Potential factors influencing the assessment and availability of treatment guidelines include the sensitivity and stigmatization of the topic, lack of resources, ethical and legal concerns, limited availability of specialized training, and risk of professional repercussions. Based on their extensive research and clinical experience, the panelists will provide valuable insights into how behavior analysts can navigate these challenges while maintaining ethical and effective practices. Attendees will leave with a deeper understanding of the intricacies involved in this subject and directions for future research and practice.
