| Abstract: Athletes with intellectual disabilities often require more intense coaching protocols for improved participation and skill development. This paper will discuss two novel ways of coaching athletes with disabilities using various formats of group behavior skills training. Using three dyads, study one demonstrates that standard behavioral skills training in a group setting, can be an effective medium for teaching athletes with intellectual disability proper execution of a football play. Study two demonstrates the utility of modified behavior skills training using instruction, live in-situ modeling and feedback within a group setting to teach three athletes with intellectual disability athletic posturing and shuffling. Both studies used visual analysis and the effect size of non-overlap of all pairs to analyze results. Implications across these two studies indicated that improving coaching styles will improve athletic development. Further these studies noted improvement across socialization, inclusion and program development. Discussion will include limitations with controlling the setting for appropriate coaching, development of task analyses and individual versus group outcome data. Additionally, both studies were found to be socially valid and accepted across all athletes with intellectual disabilities. |
