Abstract: The temporary shutdown of in-person operant laboratory activities due to COVID set the occasion to teach basic operant principles via online computer coding activities using the inexpensive Livecode authoring system. Livecode, a descendent of Apple's Hypercard but available for all major systems, provides a graphical rapid development environment written in plain-language scripts rather than obscure computer syntax (e.g., C++, Python, Swift). A series of modular lessons delivered textually and by video were created to teach schedules of reinforcement and other behavioral principles. Simultaneously, the students were taught to make simple graphical user interfaces and data collection schemes such that their work might later be used to create cross-platform and interactional research and teaching tools. This presentation will introduce the audience to the Livecode development environment and how they were used in the online tutorials. |
