Description: This course focuses on teaching participants (a) how to conduct assessments of relevant skill strengths and deficits, preferences, and potential barriers to starting an independent practice, (b) legal and ethical requirements, (c) key self-management strategies to employ, (d) how to make data-based decisions about the direction of their business, and (e) how to determine core characteristics of the services they’ll provide. The content is heavily focused on the ethical and legal requirements and guidelines associated with practicing independently. Self-assessment is an essential part of the curriculum which aims to teach participants how to match their identified scope of competence with their identified client base. The overall goal is to help practitioners learn more about how to successfully transition from an employed position to self-employment while maintaining a high level of effective services.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the presentation, participants will be able to: (1) Understand how to conduct an analysis of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats in preparation for launching an independent practice (2) Understand how to match their identified scope of competence with their identified client base (3) Identify key self-management strategies that will be essential to making the transition from an employee to self-employment
Activities: Workshop objectives will be met through a balanced presentation of lecture, open discussion, and individual and small group activities.
Audience: This workshop is most appropriate for BCBAs and BCBA-Ds who have completed graduate-level work and are licensed and/or certified, and who are interested in starting an independent ABA practice.
