Panel #115
CANCELED: Intersection of International Development and Best Practices for Autism
Sunday, May 29, 2016
4:00 PM–4:50 PM
Vevey 1 & 2, Swissotel
Area: CSE/AUT; Domain: Service Delivery
Chair: Cassie Harden (Global Autism Project)
ARSHIYA MALIK (Global Autism Project)
SHINTA BARASA (Hi5 for Special Needs Children)
Abstract: In order to establish centers that adhere to best practices for autism service delivery, there must be an intentional joining of best practices in sustainability, best practices in service delivery, and best practices in the field of international development. Sustainable development in particular is a concept which has lacked an operational definition within the field of applied behavior analysis. This panel examines what components are necessary to establish centers of excellence without detracting from the local economy or the culture of a community. In order to prevent the globalization of the western definition of 'center of excellence,' it is imperative to delve into the customs, resources, and perceptions of a community to ensure that any center not only adheres to local customs but is local to its own community. The success of any intervention is dependent on its accessibility and the culture surrounding its inception. Through sustainable development, interventionists ensure that a center of excellence aligns with the resources and understanding of its community.
