Workshop #W67
Behavior Analysts, Let's Write!
Friday, May 24, 2024
4:00 PM–7:00 PM
Marriott Downtown, Level 4, Franklin Hall 6
Area: EDC/AUT; Domain: Service Delivery
CE Instructor:
ADAM HOCKMAN (MGH Institute of Health Professions & ABA Technologies)
Description: Behavior analysts work in healthcare, public policy, education, sports, and other important disciplines. Writing for the public is one of the best ways to disseminate that work. When you write for high-profile publications (e.g., Harvard Business Review, New England Journal of Medicine), you reach a wider audience and your work becomes searchable online. In this workshop, participants will select a topic, identify potential publication outlets, write a pitch letter, outline an article, and build a project and accountability plan. By the end of the workshop, you will have a detailed, multiple-paragraph outline ready to guide your writing and editing. Dust off those research findings, dissertations, and rejected manuscripts, and let’s put fresh eyes on them and their potential. This workshop is part of Wider Reach Incubator, a program for behavior-analytic researchers and practitioners that is made possible by the Society for the Advancement of Behavior Analysis.
Learning Objectives: 1. Complete an article pitch to the editor of a high-profile publication 2. Draft a multiple-paragraph outline 3. Create a project plan with writing steps outlined and timelines established
Activities: The workshop will include short demonstrations for each step in the writing process. After that, participants will practice on their own using their laptops or tablets. In small groups, participants will share their topics with one another and receive feedback. The facilitator will provide guidelines and rubrics to help participants focus their feedback and edits.
Audience: Basic instruction level for behavior analysts with intermediate to advanced expertise in their given speciality area.
Content Area: Practice
Instruction Level: Basic
Keyword(s): dissertation, practice article, research article, writing
