What No One Tells You: Pursuing a Career in Academia |

Abstract: The job market for those interested in pursuing positions in post-secondary education has changed drastically within the past few years. The shifting academic job market may create additional challenges and barriers for those interested in pursuing these positions. The purpose of this panel is to provide updated information to help current, future, and recently graduated students who are curious about pursuing positions in academia. Three panel experts will comment on how they have used specific strategies to obtain academic positions in tenure-track and non-tenure-track positions. Information will be shared and key terms will be defined related to the different job opportunities, application materials, and structures existing in post-secondary education. Throughout the panel, information will be organized around some core tips that the panelists view as necessary steps in securing their current employment. Panelists will share their expertise with the goal of helping future and current job-market candidates strengthen their candidacy. |

Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to: 1) Identify at least two strategies they can use to maximize experiential learning and professional opportunities to better align with future employment; 2) Explain at least one way they can begin to track jobs while on the market; 3) Identify and discuss at least one behavior-analytic principle that relates to the importance of developing interpersonal skills. |
