Think Tanks on Cultural Studies

The Think Tank on Cultural Studies (TTCS) brought together a small group of international researchers to advance the study of cultural phenomena by integrating operant behavior and Sigrid Glenn’s concept of metacontingencies. Over time, this work led to multiple publications and a growing interest in CBS. The TTCSs have inspired publications and innovative research in the field.

There have been eight think tanks conducted in Brazil, Norway, and the U.S.A., as follows:

  1. 2005. Campinas, São Paulo Brazil. Organized by João Claudio Todorov and Maria Malott with the support of Associação Brasileira de Psicoterapia e Medicina Comportamental [Brazilian Association of Psychotherapy and Behavioral Medicine] (APBMC) and ABAI. (Todorov & Malott, 2005).
  2. 2007. Oslo, Norway; 2007. Organized by Ingunn Sandaker with the support of Oslo Metropolitan University.
  3. 2015. São Paulo, Brazil; 2015. Organized by João Claudio Todorov and Marcelo F. L. Benvenuti with the support of the University of Brasilia. /li

This article honors João Claudio Todorov and reviews the history of the Think Tanks on Cultural Studies from a culturo-behavioral science perspective. It describes how Todorov helped organize the first think tank in 2005, focused on metacontingencies and cultural selection, and how this event led to six additional think tanks that promoted collaboration, research, and publications in the field. The final think tank that Todorov attended was held online in 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic.
