Friday, May 23, 2025

Marriott Marquis, M4 Level, Liberty I-K
Area: VBC/DDA; Domain: Service Delivery
CE Instructor: Barbara E. Esch, Ph.D.
BARBARA E. ESCH (Esch Behavioral Consultants, LLC)
Description: Echoic skills play a major role in early speech development. One such role is to establish sound-making as a reinforcing activity. Another is to fast-track learning important vocal language skills, beyond just repeating what is heard. These critical skills include asking for, commenting on, or having conversations about things, people, or activities. No matter the age of an early speaker, it is useful to assess and track echoic skills as the foundation of a set of complex behaviors called vocal-verbal language. In this workshop, Dr. Esch will discuss (a) the context and goal for echoic assessment and training, using the Early Echoic Skills Assessmemt and Program Planner (Esch, 2024), (b) speech production and speech priorities for early speakers, (c) syllable complexity and phonetic transcription, and (d) speech programming: results analysis and target selection and sequencing. This workshop will use videos, lecture, and supplementary materials. Attendees will receive a handout of workshop presentation slides. There will be opportunities to practice skills using sample worksheets and program planning tasks from the EESAPP Work Packet contained in EESAPP's Protocol manual, with a goal that, by the end of the workshop, attendees will have a sample beginning speech program for their unique learner.
