Behavior Analysis in the Arts is the special interest group for promoting the relationship between behavior analysis and the arts—literature, visual arts, music and performing arts. Whether someone is an artist, afficianado or interested in the arts, all are welcome to attend the SIG.
The SIG holds scheduled meetings at the annual ABAI convention. Discussions include examining creativity within the behavioral framework, the relationship between the arts and behavior analysis including verbal, behavioral and private/inner behaviors. It also includes plans for future performances.
Our topics of interest are an artwork itself, the process of creativity, inner behavior, outer behavior, audience response to a work, and all the variables within and between these categories. The construction of a work of art is a complex process and is a part of the interest of the SIG. To give a detailed analysis of this is far beyond the scope of this description, but this was well covered in the 2018 Mechner article and responses in The Psychological Review, 68, #3.
Present focus is to have more members attend the SIG meeting in May 2019 in order to discuss the plans for the 2020 Evening of the Arts program. |
