Continuing Education (CE) FAQs

ABAI is a Type 2 ACE provider for the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB), is approved by the American Psychological Association (APA) to sponsor CE for psychologists, and is approved by the Qualified Applied Behavior Analysis Credentialing Board (QABA) to offer CE for those with Applied Behavior Analysis Technician or Qualified Autism Services Practitioner credentials. ABAI maintains responsibility for all programs and their content.

The BACB requires that CE events have content that is behavior analytic in nature; APA requires the content to be specific to psychologists.

What types of events offer CE?

Symposia, panels, workshops, invited presentations, and B. F. Skinner lectures.

How do you determine which events are available for CE?

When a submission is made, it is optional to request a CE review. The ABAI CE coordinator reviews all such requests to determine whether submissions meet the appropriate CE standards. Not all authors request that their submission be reviewed, and not all reviewed submissions are approved for CE.

How do I know if an event is offered for CE?

Events approved for CE are identified in ABAI’s convention app, online program, and print program. Events designated as "BACB" are approved for BACB CE units (CEUs), events designated as "PSY" are approved for APA CE, and events designated as "QABA" are approved for QABA CE.

How do I know if an event contains BACB ethics or supervision content?

Any submission designated by the author as containing ethics or supervision content must include a rationale, which is reviewed by the ABAI CE coordinator. If approved, ethics/supervision events are identified in the app, online, and in the print program.

Where do I find my CE certificates?
CE certificates can be found on the certificates page of your ABAI portal. CE certificates will not be available for printing/download until the event concludes and the CE has been paid for.

Please note: ABAI does not submit CE information on your behalf; you are responsible for obtaining your certificates and submitting the necessary documentation to the appropriate organization (BACB, APA, or QABA).

I have a CE-related complaint. Whom do I talk to?

Please contact convention@abainternational.org, or, if on site, visit the CE booth.

APA-Specific Information

Please see CE-related statements below from APA’s Standards and Criteria for Approval of Sponsors of Continuing Education for Psychologists.

Definition of Continuing Education for Psychologists. Continuing education (CE) in psychology is an ongoing process consisting of formal learning activities that (1) are relevant to psychological practice, education and science; (2) enable psychologists to keep pace with the most current scientific evidence regarding assessment, intervention, and education as well as important legal, statutory, or regulatory issues; and (3) allow psychologists to maintain, develop, and increase competencies in order to improve services to the public and enhance contributions to the profession.

Curriculum Content. CE programs must be grounded in an evidence-based approach. CE programs that are focused on application of psychological assessment and/or intervention methods must include content that is credibly supported by the most current scientific evidence. CE programs may also provide information related to ethical, legal, statutory or regulatory policies, guidelines, and standards that impact psychology.
