Armando Machado obtained his undergraduate degree in Psychology at the University of Lisbon and his PhD in Experimental Psychology at Duke University. His research on the conditions in which pigeons generate highly variable, random-like behavior received the Annual Dissertation Award from Division 25 of the American Psychological Association. He was a tenured Associate Professor at Indiana University before joining the University of Minho where he became Full Professor and where he set up the first laboratory in Portuguese Psychology Departments to study animal learning and cognition. In most of his studies, Armando Machado contrasts data with the predictions of simple quantitative models of behavior. His work has been published in various specialized journals and funded by NIMH in the USA and FCT in Portugal. He served as Editor of the journal Behavior and Philosophy and Associate Editor of Learning and Behavior, Psychonomic Bulletin & Review, and the Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior. Armando Machado was Program Chair and then President of the American Society for the Quantitative Analysis of Behavior, and the first president of the Portuguese Association of Experimental Psychology.
