
Dr. William L. Heward is Professor Emeritus at The Ohio State University, where he taught for 30 years. Internationally recognized for his work in two related fields–special education and applied behavior analysis–Dr. Heward has served as a Visiting Professor of Psychology at Keio University in Tokyo and as a Senior Fulbright Scholar in Portugal. He has been a consultant to local school districts, state education departments, and mental retardation agencies, and he has conducted workshops for teachers throughout the U.S. and abroad. In 1985, Dr. Heward received The Ohio State University's highest honor for teaching excellence: the Alumni Association's Distinguished Teaching Award.
Dr. Heward has published more than 80 peer-reviewed research and conceptual papers in professional journals and is the author or co-author of 8 books, including Applied Behavior Analysis (with John Cooper and Tim Heron). Currently in its eighth edition, his textbook, Exceptional Children: An Introduction to Special Education, has been used at more than 400 colleges and universities in the U.S. and translated into Spanish, Korean, Chinese, and Japanese. Dr. Heward’s current interests focus on “low-tech” methods with which classroom teachers can increase each student’s active participation and learning during group instruction, curricular and instructional adaptations that promote the generalization and maintenance of newly learned skills, and the acceptance and use of applied behavior analysis in education.
