Sidney W. and Janet R. Bijou Endowment

In December 1996, Dr. Sidney W. and Janet R. Bijou funded a substantial endowment to SABA to enable doctoral students to study child development from a behavior-analytic perspective. The resulting Sidney W. and Janet R. Bijou Fellowship Program provided a single annual fellowship, the first of which was awarded in 1998. In 2003, Dr. Bijou made a second donation to increase the number of annual fellowships offered each year to two.

About Dr. Sidney and Janet Bijou

Dr. Sidney Bijou is known for training many outstanding behavior analysts, for significant contributions to research and developmental theory, and for his advocacy of the international development of the field, just to mention a few of his accomplishments. A graduate of the University of Florida (B.A, 1933) , Colombia University (M.A., 1937), and the University of Iowa (Ph.D., 1941), Dr. Bijou's research involved studying the learning development of children using a behavioral perspective, using applied behavior principles to treat children with mild psychological problems, and demonstrating that behavioral principles could be applied to the teaching of young children with developmental disabilities. His work in learning development of children was published as Behavioral Analysis of Child Development with Donald M. Baer in 1961. This publication has undergone two revisions and been used widely in university courses in child development and psychology.

Dr. Bijou is a former president of the Division of Child Development of the American Psychological Association (APA) and the Association for Behavior Analysis. He has been honored by the APA, ABA, the National Association for Retarded Citizens, and several universities. He is founding Editor of the Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, a publication of the APA. Dr. Bijou is also a war veteran, having served in the Air Force for three years during World War II.

The Bijous were married in 1934 and had two children. Janet Bijou worked as a special education teacher while Sidney completed his studies at Colombia University. She continued her work with children and established a remedial reading program and preschool during their time in Seattle. Janet also worked for the Institute for Personality and Ability Testing as an international representative. Janet Bijou passed away in December, 2000. The generous SABA endowment funded by Sidney and Janet is testimony to their interest in ensuring that all children - whether developmentally disabled or not - are allowed to reach their full potential.
