Guidelines for the Accreditation of Graduate Programs in Behavior Analysis
Policies and Procedures: Selecting Members of the Accreditation Board
The following procedure must be followed by the ABA International Executive Council and the Chair of the Accreditation Board, for the appointment of the Accreditation Board Members:
- The ABA International Executive Council appoints the Chair of the Accreditation Board.
- The Chair of the Accreditation Board shall nominate individuals for membership to the Accreditation Board, and submit these nominations (plus alternates) to fill vacant seats at each Fall Council meeting.
- The Executive Council shall, by vote, approve or reject individual nominations of members of the Accreditation Board. All six members will be appointed to serve for three years, to be staggered so that two member change each year. (Initially, to begin the staggering of terms, two members shall be appointed for three years, two for two years, and two for one year.)
- Appointees to the Board will be full-members of ABA International with various expertise in applied research, basic research, conceptual issues, service issues, and methodology so that all of these areas of expertise are represented on the Board.
- Accreditation Board members may serve up to two consecutive terms.
- As terms of service end, the Chair of the Accreditation Board shall nominate individuals for membership to the Accreditation Board. The Executive Council shall approve individuals for three-year terms to fill the vacancies on the Accreditation Board, keeping the various areas of expertise represented.
- In the case of a member of the Accreditation Board withdrawing from the Board before his or her term is up, the Chair of the Accreditation Board will make a replacement recommendation to the Executive Council, who will then vote on the replacement candidate. This does not have to occur at the Fall Council meeting.
- If the load of the Accreditation Board will be so heavy during a particular year that the regular Board members can not do all of the work, the President of ABA International will, in consultation with the Chair of the Accreditation Board, appoint as many ad hoc members, drawn from the maintained list, for one year terms, as necessary to do the scheduled work. These ad hoc members will sit as members of accreditation teams and will vote on recommending accreditation of programs as would regular members. The President, in making ad hoc appointments, will preserve balance over areas of expertise.
