Four Corners ABA
By Dr. Jeff Kupfer
The Four Corners Association for Behavior Analysis (4 CABA) was founded in 2006 and recognized in 2007 as the regional Chapter for ABAI representing Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah. The mission of 4 CABA is to:
- Serve as a scientific and professional reference group for all in the states of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah who identify themselves as scientists or practitioners in disciplines and activities that utilize the principles and practices of behavior analysis.
- Promote basic and applied research that will advance understanding of human and other animal behavior.
- Identify and promote the use of effective treatment procedures in the educational, therapeutic, and habilitation needs of persons in Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah within the ethical guidelines set forth by the Behavior Analysis Certification Board®, Inc.
- Organize and sponsor an annual conference that will serve as a forum for presentation of scientific research, technological achievements, and demonstrations of successful transfer of technologies. Presentations bridging animal and human research are particularly welcome.
- Promote the development and expansion of education, training, and employment in the field of behavior analysis.
- Support efforts of allied organizations in providing evidence-based behavior analytic services
Our First Annual Meeting
On April 4–5, 2008, 4 CABA held its first annual meeting in Boulder, Colorado. Approximately 80 persons attended the inaugural celebration at the historic Broker Inn Hotel.
Invited speakers from the four state catchment area and elsewhere provided a diverse range of topics that captured the spirit of our mission statement. Speakers included: Carl Cheney, Michael Dougher, Christine E. Hughes, Raymond C. Pitts, William R. Hutchison, Peter Killeen, Jeff Kupfer, Michael Mozzoni, Amy Odum, and Carol Pilgrim. Our poster session drew presenters from the four member states, as well as from California, Idaho, and New York.
Other activities included an APBA information sharing session by David Hatfield to bring behavior analysis practitioners into contact with the new organization.
We anticipate that the location for future annual meetings will be rotated around the four states, offering attendees opportunities to learn more about behavior analysis in neighboring states and a forum for exchanging ideas and professional interests. Next year’s conference will be announced by June 30, 2008.
4 CABA is pleased to announce the following Officers and Directors:
- President-Elect: Anne Kupfer
- Board of Directors: Pamela Martien
- Co-Student Representative: Trina Spencer
- Co-Student Representative: Paulette Christopher
Four Corners ABA Web Site
4 CABA has a Web site devoted to the activities of the organization. The Web site can be accessed at: http://www.4CABA.org. Kenneth Stephens constructed the site and maintains its content. We will continue to expand the site to increase the flow of information in the four states regarding behavior analysis.
Continuing Education Unit (CEU) Provider
In 2007, 4 CABA was approved as an ACE CEU provider. Full and Supporting Members attending the Four Corners ABA conference are entitled to earn CEUs for attended presentations at no additional charge.
Upcoming plans: E-Newsletter
4 CABA will be starting an e-newsletter that will be sent to all members later this year. The newsletter will contain a page devoted to each of the four states regarding behavior analysis opportunities, events, and general topics of interest.
