Speech Pathology (SPABA)
By Dr. Barbara E. Esch
The Speech Pathology SIG’s mission is to promote dissemination of behaviorally oriented speech and language research/application of evidence-based practices to speech and language professionals (SLP). During the past year, we have made important contributions toward this mission.
Our members report the following activities for 2006-07 in venues accessed by speech and language professionals:
- Manuscripts (published or in press) included eight empirical papers, three discussion papers, and one book chapter.
- Conference presentations consisted of papers, posters, seminars, short courses, and workshops. There were 12 such presentations at ABA 2007, matching those made the previous year. For the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s 2006 convention, ABA Speech Pathology SIG members submitted seven proposals, three of which were accepted and presented at their November meeting. At international, state, and regional conferences attended by speech/language professionals, SIG members made 54 presentations, an increase from 32 the previous year.
- Other activities: One of our SIG members serves as Senior Associate Editor of the SLP-ABA Journal (www.slp-aba.com) and another SIG member was awarded a two-year grant for software development related to language and social skills acquisition for children with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorders.
- Goals for 2007-08 will be related to increasing activities in the areas listed above as well as increasing student membership and continuing to promote professional collaboration between speech pathologists and behavior analysts.
