By Corina Jimenez-Gomez

Your Student Representatives

The student committee of ABA International consists of three student members who are elected by current student members to serve a three-year term. The present student committee includes:

The Student Committee welcomes Student Representative-Elect Erick Dubuque. We also thank Christy Alligood for her outstanding service on the Committee during the last

three years.

Mission of the ABA Student Committee

ABA student members constitute over a third of the association’s total membership. The ABA Student Committee’s mission is to provide organizational support for ABA student members that will promote participation in ABA and professional growth, and enable members to contribute to the science of behavior analysis.

Student Members and ABA 2007 San Diego

The ABA annual conference in San Diego was a great success. We had record-breaking attendance with over 4,300 registrants, of which 1,440 were students. The Student Committee thanks all student members who contributed to the success of the conference by attending or by presenting. We also thank the Society for the Advancement of Behavior Analysis (SABA), whose generous donors provided registration for 146 student presenters at this year’s conference.

The Student Committee sponsored fifteen Professional Development Series events at the conference, with topics ranging from behavior analysis around the world to an introduction to quantitative analysis of behavior. We thank all who participated in these events by planning, chairing, presenting, or attending. In addition to organizing the Professional Development Series, the Student Committee conducted its annual business meeting, presented a poster on the Student Committee at the ABA Expo, organized the Behavioral Bash, and collected data to be used in the planning of future conference events.

Individual programs are responsible for the selection of representatives. Program Representatives attend the annual Student Committee meeting at the ABA conference, communicate with Student Representatives regarding student issues, actively participate in planning conference events, and encourage participation in the nomination and election process for Student Representatives.

2007 Outstanding Mentors

For a second time, Student Committee members nominated and voted for the Outstanding Mentors Award. Student members presented these awards at the Behavioral Bash held Saturday night during the conference. We are grateful for the opportunity to publicly thank these individuals for their outstanding mentorship. This year’s awardees were:

Future Goals

The ABA Student Committee is committed to serving the student membership through activities that support our mission statement. In the coming year, these activities will include using the data gathered at this year’s Professional Development Events to plan events ABA 2008 in Chicago, recruiting Program Representatives from all graduate training programs, selecting Outstanding Mentors, facilitating international work opportunities for graduates of behavior analysis programs, providing information regarding awards and contests, and holding the election for the next Student Representative.

We encourage student members to become involved in Student Committee activities. Please direct your questions and comments to your Student Representative, Corina Jimenez-Gomez at corinaj@cc.usu.edu.
