Experimental Analysis of Human Behavior (EAHB)
By Dr. Cynthia Pietras
The Experimental Analysis of Human Behavior (EAHB) SIG aims to promote the experimental analysis of human behavior. The EAHB SIG sponsors and maintains the Experimental Analysis of Human Behavior Bulletin,, an online, ongoing journal for empirical articles, research in progress, technical information, and other articles related to human operant research. Laboratory descriptions and member activities are also accepted. The SIG sponsors a yearly Student Paper Competition that is designed to promote and recognize scholarly activity in the experimental analysis of human behavior. Each year the SIG has also presented an annual Distinguished Career Award at the Association for Behavior Analysis International conference to an individual who has made outstanding lifetime contributions to the experimental analysis of human behavior.
In 2006, the EAHB-SIG held its annual meeting at the ABA annual conference in Atlanta. At this meeting, the SIG congratulated and gave awards to the 2005-2006 Student Paper Winners: Christine Engle of University of North Carolina-Wilmington for her paper, “Aging and categorization: Using generalized equivalence classes and their characteristics to compare older and younger adults,” sponsor Dr. Mark Galizio, and Michael A. Magoon of Auburn University for his paper, “Response-consequence contingency discriminability when positive and negative reinforcement compete in concurrent schedules,” sponsor Dr. Tom Critchfield, Illinois State University. Each student presented his or her paper as a poster at ABA. The SIG was also honored to present its 2006 Distinguished Career Award to Dr. Joseph V. Brady. During his invited address, Dr. Brady discussed the important work that has been done and remains to be done in the area of micro societies and programmed environments, particularly for analyzing human behavior during extended space flights. He was introduced by Dr. Steven Hursh.
At the 2007 ABA annual convention in San Diego, the SIG presented awards to our new student paper winners. Congratulations to: Jennifer Hitt’s, Illinois State University, sponsor Dr. Tom Critchfield, for her paper “An application of the matching law to Big Ten basketball,” and Brian D. Kangas, University of Florida, sponsor Dr. Diana Walker, for his paper “An adjusting-dose procedure to identify the optimal reinforcing dose of nitrous oxide.” The EAHB-SIG appreciates all of the participants and reviewers who have once again made the contest a success. Award winners presented their papers as posters during the convention. The SIG was also very pleased to present the 2007 Distinguished Career award to David R. Schmitt. The SIG held its annual meeting at ABA in San Diego, where we discussed nominations for the SIG’s Student Paper Award Coordinator and Treasurer, the EAHB Bulletin, nominations for next year’s award recipients, membership, and other business.
Additional information on the EAHB SIG, the EAHB Bulletin, and membership can be found at www.eahb.org or by visiting our poster at the ABA Expo. Those interested in the student paper competition should consult the Website for contest rules and instructions. We are currently accepting nominations for next year’s Distinguished Career Award. Submissions to the EAHB Bulletin are always welcome.
