Autism
By Dr. Mary Jane Weiss
The Autism SIG, chartered by the Association for Behavior Analysis, brings together those individuals who specialize in or have an interest in the application of behavior analysis to the education and treatment of autism across the lifespan. The Autism SIG has three primary purposes: 1) To promote behavior analytic research and the exchange of scientific information in the area of autism treatment; 2) To advocate for and promote high standards in the application of behavior analytic treatments; and 3) To support consumers of ABA services.
Autism SIG sponsors several events and publishes a variety of resources for practitioners, researchers, and consumers of ABA. The Autism SIG organizes conference events at the annual meeting of the Association for Behavior Analysis International and conducts an annual student research contest for graduate and undergraduate students presenting their research at the annual ABA conference. The Autism SIG also co-publishes a quarterly newsletter with the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies Autism SIG. This newsletter focuses on a variety of topics within the autism field and includes research summaries, program descriptions, and article synopses related to the topic. Recent topics have included Early Intervention, School Settings, and Problem Behavior.
Members of the Autism SIG are also invited to sit on committees formed within the SIG. Currently, we support committees on Membership, Consumer Resource Development and Dissemination, Website, and the Newsletter.
Our diverse membership includes academicians, researchers, administrators, practitioners from a variety of disciplines, parents, and other consumers. We welcome new members who share our interest in applied behavior analysis and autism treatment. Members receive the SIG’s quarterly newsletter at no cost.
