Alabama ABA

By Dr. Beth Ann L. Foate

The Alabama Association for Behavior Analysis (ALABA) serves as a scientific and professional reference group that embraces the principles and practices of behavior analysis. Our goal is to promote research that will advance the understanding of behavior and to identify and promote the use of effective and humane behavioral procedures that meet the educational and habilitative needs of individuals. In addition, ALABA strives to serve as a resource for political, legislative, and policy-making bodies in Alabama in ways that support the scientific and professional interests of behavior analysis.

The 15th annual ALABA convention was held at the Double Tree Hotel Birmingham, on October 24-26. It was a very successful convention by any standard. A total of 62 individuals attended the four preconvention workshops on Tuesday, with most people staying to attend the convention on Wednesday and Thursday. The workshop by Dr. Michael Strouse was especially well attended and received excellent feedback from conference attendees.

Attendance for the convention was the highest it has been in the last four years, with a total of 148 people attending. Of these, 11 attended as affiliate members and 124 as professional members (18 students, 32 with a baccalaureate degree, 57 with a Masters degree, and 17 with a doctoral degree), and 13 registering as non-members. The professions of teaching, social work, psychology, and counseling were well represented. This past year’s conference also saw the most Board Certified Behavior Analysts in attendance ever, with over 30 BCBAs attending.

ALABA is currently assembling the program, which may be found on their Website www.auburn.edu/alaba later in the year. If you will be moving to the area or are interested in more information about ALABA, please visit our Website and send us your contact information
