Behaviorists Interested in Gambling
By Jonathan C. Baker
The mission of the Behaviorists Interested in Gambling Special Interest Group (BIG-SIG) is to foster and promote research on gambling and treatments for problem gambling from a behavioral perspective. Meeting this mission is important for behavior analysis because it, as a field, has largely been silent in the literature on gambling.
In the past year, the BIG-SIG has continued to publish two issues a year of Analysis of Gambling Behavior, a print journal with back issues available online. The journal's website is up and running (http://analysisofgamblingbehavior.org/page1/page1.php) and work to arrange electronic access via PubMed and PsychInfo is continuing, which will help raise the profile of behavior-analytic research on gambling. Authors are encouraged to consider Analysis of Gambling Behavior as an outlet for their work. Recent issues have included a special issue based on the 2010 ABAI Annual Convention that focused on the future of gambling research, as well as a special section on delay discounting (with accompanying commentaries) and cutting-edge research on multiple potential of slot machines, the role of alcohol in maintaining gambling behavior, and effects of stopping devices and win rates on preferences in slot machine gamblers.
