Inside Behavior Analysis

New Jersey ABA

By Lori Bechner

NJABA was founded in 2004 to promote the discipline of behavior analysis in New Jersey. Over the past year, NJABA has continued to work toward the goals of dissemination of research and provision of informational resources throughout the state.

NJABA is committed to providing continuing education opportunities for professionals as well as others interested in the field of behavior analysis, including graduate students, consumers, and parents. In March, we were pleased to host our annual spring workshop at Caldwell College. This year, Dr. Brian Iwata presented on the topic of functional analysis and treatment of problem behavior. Dr. Iwata was very well received, with over 140 people in attendance! Our annual summer conference took place July 17-18, 2009 at Rutgers University. Friday's program will include data-based symposia and invited presentations. We were honored to have Dr. Patricia Krantz and Dr. Lynn McClannahan present the keynote address. On Saturday, Dr. Murray Sidman presented a full day workshop: "Errorless Learning and Programmed Instruction: The Myth of the Learning Curve.”

We distribute an online newsletter, Current Dimensions, twice each year. This newsletter features interviews, book and article reviews, and information regarding current events. Past editions of the newsletter can be viewed on our Web site.

NJABA has recently formed a Public Relations Committee. We are currently working on developing a series of press releases on autism and applied behavior analysis, in efforts to inform the larger community about effective treatment. In addition, our Government Affairs Committee continues to explore options for state recognition of credentialed behavior analysts for the purpose of consumer protection.

As the year comes to a close, we would like to thank our current officers and appointed board members:

We thank our Past-President, Dr. Marlene Cohen, for her dedication and service to NJABA, and are happy to welcome our incoming President, Dr. Greg MacDuff.
