Four Corners ABA
By Jeff Kupfer
The Four Corners Association for Behavior Analysis (4 CABA) was founded in 2006 and recognized in 2007 as the regional Chapter for ABAI representing Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah. The mission of 4 CABA is to:
- Serve as a scientific and professional reference group for all in the states of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah who identify themselves as scientists or practitioners in disciplines and activities that utilizes the principles and practices of behavior analysis;
- Promote basic and applied research that will advance understanding of human and other animal behavior;
- Identify and promote the use of effective treatment procedures in the educational, therapeutic and habilitation needs of persons in Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah within the ethical guidelines set forth by the Behavior Analysis Certification Board®, Inc.;
- Organize and sponsor an annual conference that will serve as a forum for presentation of scientific research, technological achievements, and demonstrations of successful transfer of technologies. Presentations bridging animal and human research are particularly welcome.
- Promote the development and expansion of education, training, and employment in the field of behavior analysis;
- Support efforts of allied organizations in providing evidence-based behavior analytic services.
Our Second Annual Meeting
On April 6 and 7, 4 CABA held its second annual meeting in Sedona, Arizona. Approximately 60 persons attended the conference.
Invited speakers from the four corner states area and elsewhere included: William Baum, Richard Foxx, Sigrid Glenn, Richard Smith, Daniel Openden, Bryan Davey, and Federico Sanabria. In recognition of the Four Corners mission statement, annual meetings included invited speakers from outside of mainstream behavior analysis, but whose research bears directly on conceptualizations in behavior analysis. We were fortunate to have Stephen Suomi (Eunice Kennedy, NIH) present his research on Risk, Resilience, and Gene x Environment Interactions in Rhesus Monkeys; and Stephen Helms Tillery (Arizona State University) speak on Muscle-free Behavior: Analysis of Neuroprosthetic Control. Our poster sessions included more presenters and drew presenters from the four states and from Idaho.
Other activities included an Open Forum on Practicing Applied Behavior Analysis in the Four Corner Region lead by Michael Dougher and Jeff Kupfer. Topics discussed included licensing practices in states, insurance reimbursement for ABA services for persons with autism, and legislative initiatives in the four state regions.
We will continue rotating locations for future annual meetings. The proposed location for the third annual meeting is Park City, Utah. Further details will be provided in our September newsletter.
